IIridion 3D/I is reminiscent of arcade shooters such as IGalaga/I or IGradius/I, except that IIridion/I is done in over-the-shoulder third-person 3-D. The problem is that this perspective really, really hurts the gameplay. One can only wonder how much better IIridion 3D/I might have been had the developers chosen a more workable point of view. p Your ship sometimes blocks your sightline as you shoot, and it's extremely difficult to accurately gauge distance and depth perception. Is that a small enemy that's close to my ship (maybe even about to collide with it), or is it a large one that's farther away? Are they shooting at me or are those "shots" actually distant ships? Are those enemies or part of the tunnel scenery? Another problem is the jerky control. If you're flying through a tunnel trying to kill the bad guys, you should be able to literally fly in circles. With the Game Boy Advance directional pad, squares are about all you can manage. p At least the game is extremely pretty to look at. IIridion 3D/I boasts one of the best graphics engines available for the Game Boy Advance, and considering the competition, that's no idle compliment. Progressing through the stages and worlds one is bombarded with beautiful scenery almost as much as enemy fire. p Yes, the game looks spectacular, and it will partially appease arcade shooter fans waiting for Game Boy Advance conversions of classics such as IR-Type/I and the aforementioned coin-ops. The game starts with a visit to now-grown-up Wendy's house to take her kids on their own adventure to Never Land. Once there, Tinker Bell is kidnapped, so you've got to rescue her and all of the Lost Boys spread throughout levels in the game. As on any other platformer, you must run, jump, and dispatch baddies (Peter does this with his trusty dagger, which he can also throw) to get to whereyou're going, buthere you can also fly--provided you have Tink and enough pixie dust by your side. The power-ups and secret items are plentiful and pretty easy to find, which seems to be the right difficulty approach, given the younger audience of this game. Older kids and adults may want to play the game at the harder difficulty setting in the options menu. There are also clips of the movie that can be unlocked by finding hidden film reels, but these are short and rather bland.p The downside of this title is still very common among portable games: no battery save feature. Rather than saving your progress through the game, players are given jumbled strings of letters to mark their completion of the end of a level.
